The Triple P - Positive Parenting Program
      by W. Rodney Hammond, Ph.D.
      Centers For Disease Control

A new study, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), shows when parents have access to proven parenting interventions designed to address problems all families face-from tantrums to encouraging good behavior - key measures of child maltreatment fall.

Support for families enrolled in the study came through the Triple P - Positive Parenting Program. The program uses a multi-level, parenting, and family support strategy that aims to prevent behavioral, emotional and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents. Triple P incorporates a wide range of support mechanisms for parents including local media, brief public seminars, and parent consultation by specially trained providers in clinics, schools, churches, and community centers.

Researchers Ronald J. Prinz, Matthew R. Sanders, Cheri J. Shapiro, Daniel J. Whitaker and John R. Lutzker estimate for an area containing 100,000 children under age eight that the results found in the study could translate annually into 688 fewer cases of child maltreatment, 240 fewer out-of-home placements, and 60 fewer children with injuries requiring hospitalization or emergency room treatment.

How Do Secure Mother-Child Attachments Predict Good Relationships?                                     by Phyllis Picklesimer
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Preschool children who are securely attached to their mothers form closer friendships in the early grade-school years for a number of reasons, according to a new University of Illinois study published in Child Development.

"In a secure, emotionally open mother-child relationship, children develop a more positive, less biased understanding of others, which then promotes more positive friendships during the early school years," said Nancy McElwain, a U of I assistant professor of human and community development and lead author of the study.

Scientists have known about the link between attachment and friendship quality, but they haven't understood the reasons it exists, she added.

The study included 1,071 children from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Researchers assessed mother-child attachment at age three. They also assessed how openly mothers and children acknowledged and communicated about their emotions when the child was four and a half.

New Grad Nation Guidebook and Tools
America's Promise

America's Promise has announced that the latest version of Grad Nation, an evidence-based guide to help increase the high school graduation rate in communities across the country has been released. New suggestions and updates from practitioners and technical assistance providers throughout the field have been incorporated.

According to announcement from America's Promise,  "One-third of all students and half of minority youth - a startling 1.2 million kids - fail to graduate high school each year. Many of those who do graduate lack the basic skills needed to succeed in college, work and life.  With this many children at risk, our nation is at risk."

Authored by Robert Balfanz, Ph.D. and Joanna Honig Fox from the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University, and John M. Bridgeland and Mary McNaught of Civic Enterprises, Grad Nation presents a compelling case for a broad cross-section of all organizations and individuals to get involved.

The guide offers a variety of resources and solutions that address the challenge at every level, while recognizing that there is no silver bullet for reducing the nation's dropout rate. Grad Nation is the first 'one stop shop' for anyone who wants to assemble the best set of approaches that will impact the problem.

Six Secrets For Converting Website Visitors to Loyal Clients
by Jody Johnson Pawel, LSW, CFLE
Parents Toolshop

Statistics show you must have at least 5-7 contacts with a potential client, to establish a relationship and build trust, before they are likely to use your services. "Conversion" techniques offer these extra opportunities to connect with, support, educate and help visitors, so they are more likely to become clients later.

Here are the six secrets for using conversion techniques ethically and responsibly:

Secret #1: While visitors are at your site, start building a relationship with them. Get them involved, engaged and connected by using interactive features such as:

- Assessments, surveys, quizzes, contests and information request forms.
- Allowing visitors to interact with others, by contributing articles, reviews, success stories, and ask or answer questions.
- Solicit experts in your field to provide articles or interviews.

Secret #2: Offer no-risk ways to start a relationship with you, such as giving away free resources. Some ideas are: tip sheets, e-courses, articles, e-books, PowerPoint presentations, e-newsletters, audio recordings, or free tele-seminars.  An excellent training program that teaches you how to create these resources and market your website is "The 90-Day Product Factory," co-created by Mitch Meyerson and Michael Port(http://snipurl.com/ProductFactory90day )
