| Celebrating National 'Parents' Day,' Sunday, July 24 | | Studio City, Calif. July 14, 2005. The Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC), a California nonprofit, is celebrating national 'Parents' Day' with the creation of a new weblog called EducatedParenting.com.
The educational site was launched earlier this month as a way of offering parents, grandparents, professionals, caregivers, guardians, and others the chance to learn more about important parenting and child development issues that affect them. It also provides an opportunity to interact with one of our nation's foremost authorities on effective parenting and parenting education, Dr. Kerby T. Alvy, the executive director and founder of CICC.
In October of 1994, Congress passed a joint resolution establishing the fourth Sunday of every July as 'Parents' Day.' It was signed into law by then President Clinton in ceremonies in the White House that Dr. Alvy was privileged to attend.
Dr. Alvy calls national 'Parents' Day' the "Unknown Parenting Holiday."
In a recent post on EducatedParenting.com Dr. Alvy wrote, "Rarely do we hear about the vast majority of parents who are doing great jobs in raising and nurturing children in today's challenging and dangerous times. Even when a national holiday is proclaimed to celebrate the hard work and importance of parents, most people don't even know that such a holiday exists!"
Dr. Alvy says parents and others can raise public awareness of national "Parents' Day" by calling their local government officials, chambers, service clubs, places of worship, newspapers, radio and television stations and ask if they would be willing to help with proclamations, articles or announcements.
